Glock 45 vs 19x
Let’s start by clearing up any misperceptions that may still exist in some people’s minds regarding the design of this pistol and the reasons it is useful. The Glock G45 has the same fundamental design as the Glock 19X, which caused everyone to smack their knees and giggle, and which Glock then sold like new Elvis records. I have to admit that I did a little bit of head scratching as well before learning about the advantages of a shorter slide fitted to a full-sized duty grip. Particularly officers, members of the military and LE spend a large portion of their days behind the wheel. It quickly becomes tiresome to have the sidearm pushed up into your lower ribs all day when you add in the necessary body armor and other gear. Also, when removing the gun from the holster, it is tactically advantageous to have a slide that is approximately an inch shorter to “clear leather.” Thus it made perfect sense to me that the shorter-length pistol would have a full grip and capacity. Get over it, concealed carries; it’s not always about you. I enjoyed the 19X once I had a chance to test it out for myself. A lot. Coyote tan with a slide that is almost bronze in hue, however, isn’t for everyone, especially the police force. As a result, Glock complied with requests from the LE community for a similar gun in basic black with a few upgrades. And so, the gun that Glock refers to as a crossover—basically a Glock 19 slide on a Glock 17 frame—became a real thing. And it’s a lovely thing too!
The parallels between the G45 and the G19X are too striking to ignore. But, there are certain distinguishing features that go beyond the simple fact that this one is black. Let’s examine those distinctions. To begin with, it is black. According to what I gather, police enforcement requested this model because they liked the G19X’s appearance but didn’t want the color to draw attention on the street or occasionally reveal a tactical location. Making this for us in black in exchange for our signature on the purchase order is therefore very important.
The slide of the G45 now has front serrations that match those at the back. The G45 differs from the G19X in addition to color thanks to the front serrations on the slide. Excellent for press inspections and rapid sliding runs under pressure or while unclogging a jam, especially with bare hands.
A flared magazine wasn’t something the military wanted. For a fighting weapon, the less gaps that sand and other environmental detritus may squeeze through, the better. The G45 has the magwell because cops prefer the added speed that the funnel offers while doing combat-style reloads.
The G45’s magazine well’s degree of flare makes a big difference. While the G19X is designed to keep dirt out, it is developed for quicker reloads.
I’m not sure if LE requested that the Gen5 semi-circular cutout be removed from the front strap of the grip, or if Glock just became aware of the irate crowd outside the gate, but those of you who didn’t like it will be relieved to know that it’s no longer present. Up until the modest flare of the magwell, the grip is straight. Because it lacks both the cutout and the protective lip, the G45 is something of a cross between the G19X and other Gen5 pistols (which also renders the G19X incompatible with Gen5 magazine baseplates).
